Manasarovar - Mt. Kailash

In the far west of Tibet in Himalayas is Mt Kailash (Kongrigpoke) - 6714m high and with its four sheer walls and snow capped peak, it is an awe-inspiring sight. From it flow four great rivers - the Karnali to South joining Ganges, the Indus to North, the Sutlej to West and the Brahmaputra to the East. The perpetual snow clad peak of Mt.Kailash is venerated by Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and the ancient Bonpa religion of Tibet.  In the circumambulation or Parikrama of Kailash one has to walk 53 Km and its highest point is Dolma Pass at 19000 ft. This circumambulation, clockwise for Buddhists and Hindus and anti-clockwise for Bonpa followers, is said to erase the sins of a lifetime.

Only 30km from Mt Kailash is the beautiful and serene Lake Manasarovar.  Stretching majestically over an extensive cradle of the Tibetan plateau and hanging at a heavenly height of 4550 mts (14950 feet). above the sea-level, the vast expanse of the lake with a circumference of about 88 Km and a depth of nearly 90 m covers an area of about 320 sq. Km.  The lake is majestically calm and dignified like a huge bluish green emerald or a pure turquoise set between the two mighty and equally majestic silver mountains, the Kailash on the north and the Gurla Mandhata on the south and between the sister lake Rakshas Tal or Ravan Harda on the west and some hills on the east. Manasarovar is attached to Rakshas tal with a natural canal at a height of 14900 ft./4515mt. Circumference of Rakshas tal is 122 Km.

Manasarovar is a famous lake in the Hindu mythology. According to Hindu mythology Manasaorvar was formed in the mind of Brahma, one of the Trinities of Hindu religion.  Rakshas tal is the lake created by Ravana after his failed misadventure to lift up the Holy Mount Kailash. While people (Hindus and Tibeten Buddhists) consider the Manasarovar as holy, the adjacent Rakshas tal is not considered good. Parallels are drawn as to Manasarovar and Rakshas tal as light & dark.

In winter all mountains and river lakes are frozen and covered with snow, so the time of Kailash - Manasarovar Yatra (Trip) is from May to September.  Foreign Ministry of Indian Govt. advertises this pilgrimage. Selected people go through medical tests and other formalities before they do Yatra in their batches. The other option is to make the trip through Private travel agencies in Nepal. Typically the trips take anywhere between 18 - 30 days.

.... hoping to make it one day !
